Flower Power 2018

The joy of 12 pianos in 12 gardens! San Francisco shakes off its gray lace dress and lets loose in blazing color. Green fairies cartwheel over the soft grass as Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals drift into our ears like honey. Duo pianos, violin, cello, flute, and stand-up bass form a river of music that drifts up to the branches of the great cedar. We delight in this lovely crescendo of sound as the puppeteers manipulate the marionettes’ strings. Children of all ages are entranced as the lion stalks and the wild cuckoo flies.
We sprawl under the trees, daydreams filled with bright flute notes. As the sun beats down on our shoulders, vigilant moms rub tender baby skins with sunscreen. Toddlers run in circles and babies crawl in clover. A little girl with long black hair in an orange dress looks lost and spins wildly around. I rise to help her when she suddenly spies her papa and runs to him with a beaming hug. Jazz, classical, blues, bebop, tango, soul—a lovely cacophony. Families, elders, couples, singles—we smile and commune under crazy tendrils in the New Zealand garden. Long shadows dance with green branches. Time to go. We saunter out, sated with sun and sound, as the beat poets drum a refrain. Clouds tango in blue sun
Dragonfly lights on your arm— drifts off with a kiss NOTE: Each July, 12 pianos are placed in 12 gardens in the San Francisco Botanical Gardens for two weeks. Anyone can play during the week and scheduled performances are held on the weekends. Daytime events are free. Flower Piano is San Francisco at its best!
